Mighty Marching Knights Finish Season on Top

The Centennial High School Mighty Marching Knights were named AAA Champions and Silver Division Champions (leading all the A, AA and AAA Classes) at the 9th annual Creekview Marching Classic band competition on Saturday, October 29, 2016, beating out 12 other high schools in their division from around the state and ending an exciting season of continued growth and achievement.

“It was fantastic ending the season with a big win,” said Michael Reid, Director of Bands at Centennial High School “and our Pirates performance was lots of fun. More than anything, I’ve enjoyed seeing this program grow.” Reid became the Director of Bands at Centennial High School in the fall of 2010. During his tenure at Centennial the enrollment in the band program has grown from 75 to over 200 and the Marching Knights Band has grown from 35 to over 120. The band has performed on the National Mall in Washington D.C., in the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade and in Universal Studios Florida. The bands have also received multiple Superior and Excellent ratings at both marching contests and concert festivals.

“The Centennial High School band program is incredible and I am very proud of how it represents the hard work and talent of our students and teachers,” said Kibbey Crumbley, Principal of Centennial High School. “The music and artistry is truly amazing and while it is exciting to win competitions, it is even more gratifying to see our students develop true comradery through their teamwork in the Marching Band Program.”

For those that haven’t grown up in the band world, it can seem anathema. Marching band is a combination of a varsity sport with its passion, time commitment, practice and travel, which begins in the summer and goes through the end of the fall semester. It is competitive, with regularly scheduled band competitions to compare bragging rights with other schools in the district. And, there is the camaraderie and energy that the band brings to its school’s football games, both during the game and at the half-time show. And finally, there is the community aspect of learning to be a good citizen by participating in community parades and events and fund-raisers. Understanding this unique realm is what makes it all the more exciting to celebrate the achievements of the high school marching band, and Centennial High School is no different.
