Milton Fire-Rescue Helps People Prepare For Disasters

"Disasters don't plan ahead. You can."

From The City of Milton: September is National Preparedness Month and the Milton Fire-Rescue Department, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is focused on helping the community prepare. This year's theme is "Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can."

"Images from Hurricane Harvey and its devastating effects on Texans is a powerful reminder of the importance of planning ahead," said Milton's Fire Chief Robert Edgar. "Disasters come in all sizes and it's important to be prepared no matter what."

According to Milton's Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal Matt Marietta, the department has weekly education and outreach opportunities planned to help ensure individuals, families, business owners and community groups are taking steps to be prepared at home, work, school and places of worship.

  • Week 2: Plan to Help Your Neighbor and Community
  • Week 3: Practice and Build Out Your Plans
  • Week 4: Get Involved! Be a Part of Something Larger

The Milton Fire-Rescue Department will share important information throughout the month via more traditional community emails and website updates, as well as on its social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). Residents may also sign up for monthly preparedness tips from FEMA by texting PREPARE to 43362 (4FEMA). (Carrier message/data rates apply.)

"We're even hosting a Twitter chat later in the month, a first for us, but we're eager to get the conversation started," said Marietta. "We also have an exciting announcement later in the month about a brand new community program we're rolling out."

The city is also interested in hearing how Milton residents are already preparing. Email info@cityofmiltonga.us to share your personal preparedness story and you could be featured this month as part of #ReadyMiltonGa.
