Milton Named Second Safest City in Georgia

It's the second time in as many months Milton is listed among the Peach State's safest cities. Alpharetta came in 12th on this new list.

MILTON, GA -- It seems Milton continues to rack up accolades from various organizations for its ability to provide a safe place to live for its citizens and stakeholders.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security has named Johns Creek Georgia's safest city for 2017.
To come up with its list, the Council reviews the most recent statistics from the FBI Uniform Crime Report (January - June 2016), along with its "own population data and internal research."

Cities with populations under 5,000 and those that failed to submit complete crime reports to the FBI were eliminated from consideration.

Those remaining municipalities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft) per 100,000 people.

These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 70 percent of the total (due to their severity) and property crimes accounting for 30 percent. Finally, the Council shifted the decimal point "over a few spots" to show rates per 1,000 people.

Cities in the top 10 include:

  1. Johns Creek
  2. Milton
  3. Braselton
  4. Perry
  5. Tyrone
  6. Peachtree City
  7. Port Wentworth
  8. Flowery Branch
  9. Grovetown
  10. Holly Springs

Milton's closest neighbor, Alpharetta, also 12th on the list, the entity states.

With a population of just over 37,000, Milton makes for one "relatively close-knit community."

"The crime statistics bear this idea out: as of the last rating, there were only 12 violent crimes in the city," the Council states. "That makes for an even lower rate than Johns Creek, with 0.32 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Similarly low property crime rates, with only 371 crimes total, make for an attractive set of numbers. Residents can enjoy the numerous parks, schools, and camps without worry."

It's the second time in as many months Milton has garnered the top honors of Georgia's safest city. In January, Safewise named the city the second safest municipality in the Peach State. Safewise also placed Alpharetta on its list, coming in at number 18.

Like the home safety council, Safewise reviewed FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, and the number of violent crimes and property crimes reported in the jurisdiction.
