Milton Names Interim Police Chief

Captain John Huey was named to the post, replacing former chief Deborah Harrell, who resigned on Thursday.

The city of Milton has named its interim police chief.

Captain John Huey has been tapped to serve in the post, replacing Deborah Harrell, who resigned on Thursday after a nearly eight-year career with the Milton Police Department.

Huey began his career with the agency in 2007 as Day Watch lieutenant and was promoted to captain in March 2009.

Huey started his law enforcement career in 1976 with the Panama City, Fla., Police Department. In 1977, he was hired by the DeKalb County Police Department.

While working at the DeKalb County Police Department, Huey spent the majority of his career in the Uniform Division. He served in the capacity as a precinct commander, assistant precinct commander, Uniform Division watch commander, a Uniform Division sector sergeant and a detective in the Major Felony Unit, General Crimes Unit and Narcotics.

Huey worked his way through the ranks, with his final being major. In this role he was assigned as precinct commander until he retired in October 2006.

Huey also spent four years on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1972 until 1976. In 1980, he joined the Georgia Air National Guard and spent 16 years in the 116th Security Police Squadron. He retired as a master sergeant.

Huey obtained his supervision and management certifications through the Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. He also graduated from the Command Noncommissioned Officers Academy during his service with the Air Force.
