Milton Police Investigating 'Green Dot' Payment Scam
The scam involves telling victims they missed jury duty and must pay a fine using a Green Dot Money Pak card or face jail time.

The Milton Police Department is investigating multiple cases involving a phone scammer claiming to be from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and demanding residents pay a fine for missing jury duty over the phone.
According to detectives, the caller identifies himself as a sheriff’s deputy and goes on to tell callers they missed grand jury duty and have a warrant for their arrest.
The caller offers to take payment in lieu of jail time, often in the form of Green Dot prepaid cards that can be purchased at Walmart. These cards are used to transfer cash onto prepaid debit cards or to directly pay the bills of certain participating companies.

Milton detectives warns residents this is a scam, as neither the police department nor sheriff’s office would call for a payment. The agency is also advising residents not give out your credit card information, bank account number or purchase any money orders or prepaid cards.
It’s a similar scam Alpharetta Department of Public Safety warned its citizens about last week.

A similar scam reported earlier this year involved suspects claiming to be from Georgia Power or Sawnee EMC. Those suspects would ask for payment immediately over the phone for fictitious overdue bills. Like law enforcement agencies, the power company does not operate by calling customers to accept payment over the phone.
