Milton Recognizes National Police Week With Events

From the City of Milton: Honoring those who have lost their lives in the line of duty has become a time-honored tradition since 1962 when President John F. Kennedy issued the first proclamation for National Police Week. This year is no different with tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world once again converging on Washington, DC for planned events the week of May 13.

"While Milton has been very fortunate that we've never lost an officer in the line of duty, this week provides our officers with the opportunity to reflect and honor friends and colleagues we've lost. It also allows us to connect with our residents on a deeper level through a variety of community events offered throughout the week," said Milton Police Chief Rich Austin.

National Police Week not only honors officers lost in the line of duty, but those who continue to serve and protect daily. In addition to the national ceremony, communities across the US honor fallen officers at the local level in a variety of ways. In honor of National Police Week, the City of Milton Police Department has a number of activities planned from May 12-18 including the department's annual blood drive event.

The week's scheduled events include:

Saturday, May 12

Coffee with a Cop (8 a.m. - 10 a.m.) at Laurel & May, 12630 Crabapple Road. Enjoy a cup of Joe and visit with officers from each MPACT Zone.

Police Explorers Fundraiser (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.) at Chipotle, 5290 Windward Parkway. Enjoy dinner with the family while supporting the award-winning Milton Police Explorers Post 2570. Chipotle is donating 50% of their profits that evening to benefit our Explorer program. Those dining should mention the Milton Police Explorers fundraiser when ordering.

Monday, May 14

#BacktheBlue Blood Drive (3 p.m. - 7 p.m.) Help us honor a life lost protecting others by helping save a life. The blood drive will be held at Stonecreek Church (13540 Highway 9, Milton). Donating is easy with scheduled donation appointments. Visit ww.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code "MPD" to register.

Tuesday, May 15

#ProtectYourPrivacy Secure Shredding Event (3 p.m. - 6 p.m. or until the truck is full). Residents who are not sure how to safely destroy those old bank statements or items containing personal information are invited to participate in this free secure shredding opportunity. No appointment is necessary. Purge those old documents and bring them to the Milton Police Department (13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107F).

Active Shooter Safety Seminar (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) Several Milton Police Department instructors will be on-hand to help teach the course, which will cover life-saving strategies to help in an active shooter situation and to raise awareness of behaviors that represent pre-incident indicators and characteristics of active shooters. After the seminar, the instructors will be available to answer questions. Training will be held at the Milton Municipal Court (Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107F). Friday, May 18

Annual Awards Ceremony (6 p.m. - 7 p.m.) The entire community is invited to Milton City Hall (2006 Heritage Walk) as we conclude National Police Week with a celebration recognizing the year-long accomplishments of our Milton officers.
