The use of fretwork or ornamental work consisting of interlacing parts is being widely used in today’s home furnishings and design. I saw this design used in many casegood pieces (chests, consoles, tables) at the High Point Furnishings Market this week. It usually consists of some interlocking geometric shapes used in wood work or metal. Some of these pieces show a great example of this design element being used. This is one of the most prevalent trends I observed across dozens of manufacturer show rooms at market.
In particular, the use of interlacing or connecting circular shapes speaks of unity and “connectedness”. The popular honeycomb, or hexagon, shape is also quite popular. While I am showing examples of this in some of the chests, tables and display cabinets here, it is also apparent in textiles and rugs.

A piece or two of this in the same room would be enough, though. It would be too busy feeling and distracting to have multiple pieces with this same type of design in the same area. I always err on the side of “less is more” when it comes to interior design.
