Two Drivers Cited For Speeding, Racing Near Avalon

Two men from Alpharetta were cited April 13 after they were speeding and racing near Avalon.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- After police saw two Alpharetta men speeding near Avalon, they were cited April 13 for racing.

An Alpharetta police officer was on Westside Parkway when he saw two cars approaching while speeding. The speed limit in the area is 40 MPH, and the officer estimated the drivers to be traveling about 70 MPH.

As the vehicles were approaching, the officer said he could see both of the vehicles were trading off on leading to out gain, outdistance or prevent each other from passing, the report said. There was a white van in one of the lanes getting ready to pass the officer in the turn lane. As the racing

vehicles approached, a red Corvette made a quick lane change to prevent a collision with the white
van, the officer said. The racing cars then saw the officer and slowed down.

The officer caught up with the other car, a silver BMW, and pulled them over. While speaking with both drivers, the officer said he could smell marijuana, but was unsure where from. However, a K9 could not find any drugs in the car.

While the BMW driver was exiting his vehicle, he said, "I know what I was doing was obviously very stupid." He works at a car dealership and said a super speeder ticket would possibly interfere with his job. The officer said he was not writing a super speeder ticket, only a racing ticket.

Both drivers were cited for racing on highways or streets.
