Volunteers Needed For Milton Rivers Alive Cleanup

The city's event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

MILTON, GA -- The city of Milton is putting the final touches on its annual Rivers Alive program, which will be held at various locations around the city. On Saturday, Oct. 14, volunteers will be dispatched to areas to help in waterways cleanup, education and protection initiatives.

The city's event kicks off at the host site, Bailey Farm & Gardens at 255 Hickory Flat Road, which is one mile west of the Birmingham Crossroads. Volunteers will meet event captains at 9 a.m. at the host site and will visit pre-selected sites clean up identified streams, roadways, and school properties to help keep the city and waterways pure and beautiful.

The city of Milton, in partnership with location host, individual volunteers and community groups, invites everyone regardless of age, to take part in these efforts. The required waiver form is available here. Depending on age and capabilities, volunteers will be assigned to predetermined local waterways to remove debris deposited from upstream and left by passers-by. Waders and boots will be a plus for those who want to get in the river.

The annual Georgia Waterway Cleanup is Georgia's largest single volunteer effort to protect and beautify Georgia's water resources. Rivers and streams provide us with fresh drinking water, important wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Communities across the state help preserve Georgia's precious rivers and streams through this annual volunteer event.

Rivers Alive is a unique, hands-on opportunity for citizens to learn more about the Coosa River watershed and help improve the quality of the area's drinking water. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's 70,150 miles of water resources through local waterway cleanup events that include streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands. It is an outreach program of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
