WIC Farmers Market Opens At North Fulton Health Center

The initiative is designed to bring more locally-grown fresh produce to recipients of the Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, program.

ALPHARETTA, GA — Fresh fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a person's diet, from infants who rely on caretakers, senior citizens and everyone else in between. In an effort to make more locally-grown fresh produce more accessible to less fortunate residents, the Fulton County Board of Health is hosting its annual Summer WIC Farmers Market.

The market, which caters to participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Childrens, are being held at four regional health center locations on certain days throughout August. While the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program offers food vouchers for WIC participants, local residents can also purchase fresh produce at cost.

“The farmers’ market increases access to healthy, locally grown, reasonably priced fruits and veggies and supports local farmers,” said Fulton County WIC Nutrition Manager Danica Carswell.

This year, the Fulton County Board of Health WIC program will provide 3,000 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to WIC clients, which Carswell said is a "dramatic increase" from the 1,500 vouchers provided in 2017.
