2 Indicted for Throwing Cat into Dog Cage to Watch It Get Mauled to Death

Athens police: Witness saw cat "running around inside the dog cage screaming for its life."

Two people have been indicted on felony aggravated cruelty to animals charges in Athens, accused of allegedly putting a cat into a dog’s cage to watch it be killed.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported a Clarke County grand jury handed down indictments for Jahmal Anthony Swaby, 21, and Trevaughn Miquan Thomas, 17, both of Athens, for their roles in the Sept. 30 incident on Conrad Drive.

Witnesses said the two were laughing and ignored neighbor’s shouts to stop as they watched the dog maul the cat. One witness said, according to the police incident report, the cat was “running around inside the dog cage screaming for its life.”

Police arrived to find the dog holding the dead cat.

Swaby and Thomas were charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty along with the felony charges.
