2 Killed In Weekend Crashes In Athens

ATHENS — Two unrelated crashes claimed the lives of two men over the weekend, Athens-Clarke County Police said Monday.

- Police said a 59-year-old Athens pedestrian died in a crash around 12:45 a.m. Friday on the GA-10 Outer Loop near Chase St.

When officers arrived, police said they found John Clark in the outer loop's center median.

A 1990 Honda Accord was heading west in the inside lane of the outer loop when the 43-year-old driver crashed into Clark, police said. Clark died at the scene, police said.

The driver is not currently facing charges, police said.

- The next day, a 28-year-old Athens man was killed around 12:30 p.m. in a single-vehicle crash at Buddy Christian Way, police said.

Kenry Monterola was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry east on Buddy Christian, when the Camry crossed over the center line while negotiating a curve and left the roadway, police said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said.

Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services and EMS extricated Monterola from the Camry, police said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.
