Athens Blaze Burns Abandoned Structure

There were no injuries, and the cause of the Hawthorne Extension fire is undetermined.

ATHENS, GA — An abandoned structure burned Wednesday night in the 400 block of Hawthorne Extension, according to Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters responded shortly after 8:45 p.m. to find the blaze had fully consumed the structure, fire officials said Thursday. There were no injuries in the fire.

Crews battled few access issues and high temperatures while responding to the fire, officials said.

"Firefighting crews worked well as a team and effectively managed the operation," fire officials said in a news release.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Fire officials did not identify the structure.
