Athens Man Headed to Federal Prison on Child Porn Charges

Budge Williams is a former local newspaper columnist.

Last year, Budge Earl Williams was convicted on federal firearms charges. Now, the 71-year-old Vietnam vet has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing child pornography and violating his probation, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald.

Williams had been in the Oconee County Jail since August 2012, when people at the Oconee County Library told authorities saw him downloading and printing out images of young boys being sexually exploited, the story says.

That activity was in violation of the terms of his probation, which forbade him having access to the Internet or possessing sexually explicit material, including child pornography.

In early May 2013, Williams was sentenced to 10 months in a federal detention facility, the story says. He had also been in trouble with the law for weapons charges after he tried selling machine guns and silencers to federal agents. He received five years probation after he plead guilty to unlawful transfer of a firearm and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm.
