Athens Police Briefs: Electronic Speed Sign, $10K in Gas, Christmas Decorations Stolen

ACCIDENT

Officers responded to a one vehicle accident in the 100 block of Dudley Dr around 7:15 a.m. September 8. Upon arrival, they found a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier that had struck a utility pole. The driver, Kathryn Ivey Davis of Hull, was unconscious. EMS responded and transported her to St. Mary’s Hospital. The investigation continues.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

Between 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. September 8 an attempt was made to enter the east side residence of an Athens man. He said he returned home and found his front door partially closed. It is believed entry was not made due to several dogs being inside. A witness reported hearing a loud bang and saw several black male juveniles run from the residence. One male stepped on a car that was parked next door. This car was moved onto Oak Park Ct before officers arrived. An officer made contact with the vehicle owner at that location. The investigation continues.

An attempt was made to enter a Peltry Dr residence between 11:55 p.m. September 8 and 12:45 a.m. September 9. Several screens were damaged.

BATTERY

An officer met with a Statham man at St. Mary’s Hospital. He said he was in the Paris St/Waddell St area around midnight September 9 when he was “attacked” by a black male. He said the suspect told him he owed him some money. He said the suspect picked up a rock and struck him in the head. He said as he started to walk away, he was again struck in the head, possibly by a second person. The first suspect was described as heavy set, early 30’s, bald, wearing a white t-shirt, and black gym shorts. His name is possibly “Tracy.” No description was given of the second suspect.

BURGLARY / AGGRAVATED ASSAULT / ARMED ROBBERY

Around 9:50 p.m. September 8, officers responded to a robbery that had just occurred at a Fowler Dr residence. The resident said he was asleep in bed when he was awakened by a man with a knife standing in front of him. The male asked where his money was and he told him it was in the kitchen. Another male came in the room and started going through the dresser drawers. The victim said the men took his wallet containing an ID, $5, and a credit card; prescription meds were also stolen. The suspects apparently entered and exited through an unlocked door. They were described as 6 feet tall with a skinny build. One wore a white shirt wrapped around his head, a dark t-shirt, and blue jeans. The second suspect had a dark handkerchief around his face.

BURGLARY

Between 4 p.m. September 6 and 8 a.m. September 8 Cut Right Lawn Maintenance, 2536 Commerce Rd, was burglarized. Trimmers, backpack blowers, and a bag of power hand tools were stolen. The total value was $2,830.

A Gaines School Rd storage unit was burglarized between 12 p.m. May 15 and 8 p.m. September 8. A suitcase, Christmas decorations, kitchen items, various other holiday decorations, school supplies, and an electronic keyboard were stolen. The total value was $3,570.

A Deertrigger Lndg residence was burglarized between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. September 8. A Kindle, jewelry, iPad, mini-laptop, video game systems, and video games were stolen. The total value was $6,500.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

Between 12 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. September 8, a solar radar speed detection sign valued at $3,800 and owned by the Athens-Clarke County Government was damaged. The sign was in the Nowhere Rd/Smokey Rd area when this occurred.

ROBBERY BY FORCE

Around 7 p.m. September 8 an officer met with an Athens man, who said he was walking on Carriage Ct around 11 p.m. September 7 when an unknown male approached and asked for change. He said when he pulled out his wallet, the suspect grabbed it and ran further into the complex. The wallet and contents were valued at $155. The suspect was described as around 6’, possibly 18/19 years of age with a faded style haircut and wearing a “ratty” white t-shirt and saggy pants. The man said before he called police, a male returned a credit card that was in the wallet. A possible suspect was identified.

THEFT BY TAKING

An Athens man reported copper wiring and electric conduit valued at $1,500 stolen from the back yard at his Beaverdam Rd residence. The theft occurred between 9 p.m. September 7 and 7 a.m. September 8.
Between September 4 and 8 gasoline valued at $10,290 was stolen from the tanks at Stop N’ Shop, 645 Danielsville Rd.
