Dave Spivey was 10 years old when R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People" was released.
It "was the first time I listened to an album as an album and not just some random mix tape," said Spivey, a bartender at in downtown Athens. "First time I got obsessed with an album."
Spivey was among the thousands of fans -- and non-fans -- in Athens who learned Wednesday that the band that has called the Classic City home for more than 30 years was no more.
