Book review: Great Men Bow Down

The status of our country’s moral fabric is a topic that has been debated throughout the generations, starting with the infancy of the new states.  It is a subject that will continue to fuel passionate view points for many more.  Gordon Lawrence’s book, Great Men Bow Down, is a refreshing walk through history that provides a personal and human look at the men who have been movers and shakers in their life’s work.  The table of contents reads like a who’s who of politicians, scientist, athletes, entrepreneurs, educators, entertainers, and many more recognizable names.  The common thread is not their success, but how each one’s faith and belief systems provided strength, wisdom, and guidance in their lives.

The book is more than a historical journey but one of devotion.  Gordon’s writing style makes you feel as if you are having a casual conversation with his subjects and not sitting in a lecture or sermon. He intersperses quotes, scriptures, and poems that keeps the book from reading like a history text.  The wisdom and insight among the pages will speak to any age, gender, and socioeconomic group.  It is the vision of the author that a copy of Great Men Bow Down finds its way among the future generations that will one day be the movers and shakers of their fields, the men and women that wear a uniform defending our nation, and those that have found themselves inside the walls of a prison cell.  It is not only for a Sunday school class or Bible Study group.
