Borders Bookstore Will Liquidate

Athens Borders in Beechwood Will Close

Another long-time bookstore will close in Athens. Borders Bookstores and Records, a longtime feature in Beechwood Shopping Center, will be closed and liquidated. Along with more than 400 other stores across the country, according to a story in the New York Times. More than 10,000 people are employed by Borders.

The company couldn't find a buyer, the story said. But there may be some hope for Beechwood book lovers. "While Borders was unable to find a buyer for most of itself, some of its rivals — notably its bigger rival, Barnes & Noble — have expressed interest in purchasing a few locations," the story said.

Borders began in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the 1970s.
