A group of graduate students were taking a course called Managing Innovations in Organizations offered through the Nonprofit Institute at UGA. They were assigned the task of creating a children’s book from scratch, containing an educational component, and then choosing a nonprofit organization to benefit from its sales. The group chose to partner with the Athens Area Humane Society and wanted to specifically benefit the CHLOE Humane Education Program geared toward educating children about animal welfare issues and responsible pet ownership.

Local artist, musician and mom of three, Heidi Hensley agreed to contribute to the book with her carefree, colorful illustrations and story ideas. Emma Engleberg’s Happy Pets is an entertaining story of a girl who decides to adopt a cat and dog from the local Humane Society and learns how to become a responsible pet owner. Children will learn through funny situations what is required to properly care for a pet. Kindergartners to adults alike will enjoy this happy animal tail (oops, I mean animal tale)!
