Local Athens Tradition Continues for 38th Year

The Athens Community Council on Aging's RSVP program in partnership with ACC Leisure Services' Lyndon House Arts Center is hosting the 38th Annual Harvest Festival on Thursday, October 11, 2012.

The Athens Community Council on Aging’s Retired & Senior Volunteer Program in partnership with ACC Leisure Services’ Lyndon House Arts Center is hosting the 38th Annual Harvest Festival on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Lyndon House Arts Center and Lay Park on Hoyt Street in Athens, and is open to all elementary students and community members in Northeast Georgia.

For the past four decades, the annual Harvest Festival has provided a hands-on learning experience and an opportunity for intergenerational sharing of local history, traditions, domestic skills, and crafts of the 19th century.  School age children are able to immerse themselves in history through interactive demonstrations such as weaving, broom-making, butter-churning, quilting, corn husk dolls, pottery, storytelling, music, dancing, and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your knowledge of history right in your own backyard!

Harvest Festival is marketed primarily to elementary schools as an free, educational, and fun field trip, but is also open to the public.  There is no fee for the festival and all exhibits are free.   We continue to provide this festival free of charge because we believe it is important for the youth of today to have a hands-on opportunity to learn about local history and traditions.  Light concessions and souvenirs will be available for purchase.

Groups of 10 or more must pre-register for the event by calling Emory Griffith at the Athens Community Council on Aging at 706-549-4850.  Also, if you are interested in volunteering or demonstrating at the event, please contact Ms. Griffith or visit www.accaging.org for more information.
