Preparing for the Art Fair
Self employed glass artist Annette Paskiewicz muses on the challenges of making and selling art for a living. Getting ready for a show has a myriad of tasks that can feel overwhelming.
My studio is a mess. Getting ready for an art fair is not a pretty thing to watch. What usually happens is an artist gets ALL their new ideas a week before the event and we try to do the impossible. We try to do it all. For me, just making a list of the things I need to remember is something I forget to do. What tends to happens is one or two new pieces get actually finished and about 5 other new ideas are started for the next shows after this.
The list needs to get made. Check the weather. Find out where the show is (let's not drive to the wrong part of town). This show is in Atlanta and called Spring Festival on Ponce. What's my booth number? (P-15) Get my display organized. Am I bringing jewelry and my mixed media work? That means jewelry case, walls and shelving. Bring promotion cards for my workshops and business cards. Finish the work I'm bringing, load the car, check on my accomadations, and get enough rest! Grumpy artists do NOT make sales. Make sure there is a friend who will take care of my Boston Terrier, and constant companion (but not at shows), Barney.
Currently I am finishing a really interesting piece that involves using elements from another art piece I did for a "Martini Show" at Gallery I/O in New Orleans. I decided my characters were way to fragile to be hanging about a steel martini glass so I decided to rework them into a wall piece. I'm excited about the results and even though I love these pieces I would love to sell it too and pay my bills!

Hope to see you out and about at the art fairs. I'm doing two local shows coming up in the Atlanta area. I'm also teaching glass fusing workshops in my studio space for those who want to make something cool in glass. It's all at my website Studio Mod Glass.
