2013 FLUKE Mini-Comic Festival
No shortage of poster options this week in Athens- The Farmers Market, an international street festival, a motel artshow, poetry readings, plant sales …For a poster enthusiast like myself, the possibilities can become overwhelming.
One event, however, stuck out to me as a true reminder as to why I began this venture in the first place: The 2013 FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival held at the 40 Watt.
I’m not much of a comic book aficionado myself, but the poster design was too awesome to ignore. So on Saturday afternoon I found myself wandering around the Athens annual festival mini-comic showcase. This year, over 65 artists came together to display and sell their paperbound creations, receive feedback from the public and draw inspiration from one another.

The first table that I stopped at was occupied by four girls all under the age of 14. Each had copies of their homemade comics stacked on the table infront of them. One of the girls told me that she has been drawing comics since she was 7 and has been working on on series called Elis Light for 2 years.
In the Author’s words, Elis Light is about ”A brave little flightless lighting bug girl exploring her world and making friends while finding out her purpose in life”.

I purchased her latest edition of the series for 1 dollar and I’m not ashamed to say that I really identify with that little lightning bug girl.
The second comic that I purchased was from a more seasoned, and much more racy artist named Catie Donnelly. Just standing at the table flipping through her comic, Whippin’ Shitties, had my friend laughing his ass off. For some reason, amidst all of her hilarious material, I decided to go with “I Know Your Mad”, a comic about depression. I enjoyed it thoroughly and still laughed out loud at parts.
One of my favorites of the day was a series about a paraplegic super hero with Down Syndrome but I was already out of cash by the time I reached that station.
Each table was littered with quirky characters, new worlds and fantastic adventures. So glad I checked it out.
Thats all for now, friends.
Keep your eyes peeled and you’re mind open. Poster on.
