Budget Woes Deepening at UGA

President Adams hopes this year marks the lowest point for the school's budget.

How dire are the times for state institutions?

This marks the first year that tuition from University of Georgia students will make a bigger contribution to the university’s instructional budget than will appropriations from the State of Georgia,  said UGA President Michael Adams.

Adams was holding a morning media briefing before an afternoon meeting with the University Council, when he is expected to reveal more budgetary details.

UGA officials were stunned to learn this year that the state wouldn’t be giving them an expected $16 million through a complicated funding formula. The money in that fund was zeroed out, said Adams.

The president also said the Regents-approved three percent tuition and fee increase will mean an additional $20 million in money for UGA. This will return to the school about a third of what was cut by the state this year.
