Chemical Splash Closed Street at UGA

Two were transported to St. Mary's last week, police said.

An Athens Patch reader reported last week that she was walking on Sanford Drive when she spotted a UGA Police officer at the intersection of Field Street.

The officer told her Sanford Drive was closed.

It turns out there was a chemical “splash” of some kind reported in the Geography Geology Speech building on Thursday afternoon at 3:18, according to UGA Police Lieutenant Eric Dellinger.

Two people working close to where the accident happened complained of irritation to the eyes and face. They were transported to St. Mary’s, where they were checked and treated.

The university’s Hazardous Assessment Response Team responded, Dellinger said. They evacuated the building while they handled the situation and cleaned up the spill

A few minutes after 5 p.m., the team said everything was okay, opened the street and let people into the building again.

Dellinger didn’t know what was splashed or what the condition of the two workers was. The Hazardous Assessment Response Team is the agency that handles situations like this one.
