Several current and former Town & Gown members will be performing a staged reading of Anton Chekhov's two "comedic sketches", The Bear and The Proposal at Ciné on Monday, May 21 at 5:30. "Chekhov's comedy can be pretty subtle", says Steve Elliott-Gower who is producing and directing the readings, as well as playing one of the parts. "Not these plays; these are Chekhov on speed!"
The performance was inspired by a national project called chekhov21, the brainchild of former Town & Gown member Shelly Carter, who wanted to reach out to theater friends across the country to perform staged readings of Chekhov on the 21st day of every month for a year.
The production at Ciné is part of a broader effort on the part of Ciné to celebrate the written word as the foundation of great storytelling according to Gabe Wardell, Cine's executive director.
