The Athens Folk Music and Dance Society usually sponsors a monthly Contra Dance at Memorial Park. This month the dance will be combined with a pre-festival acoustic jam the night before the North Georgia Folk Festival. The dance will feature a live band and caller. Both newcomers and experienced dancers are welcome and no partner is needed. Comfortable, soft-soled shoes are recommended. An orientation session from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. will introduce the basic moves and offer helpful hints for enjoyable dancing. Dancing will start at 8:00 p.m. and run to 11:00 p.m. At the same time, acoustic musicians will gather outside of the dance hall for an evening outdoor jam featuring old-time and bluegrass music.
The public is invited to come and dance, watch, listen, or bring their instruments and participate in the jam. Cost is $7 for the dance, but the jamming is free.
