"Earlfest": A Celebration of the Life of Earl Murphy

The life and music of Earl Murphy, one of the last of the true old-time fiddle players, will be celebrated at “Earlfest,” a program featuring family, friends and admirers. Murphy, who died last March at the age of 93, earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at Merlefest in North Carolina at the age of 92.

In Athens, Earl played with his grandson Andy Carlson, a renowned violinist and fiddler. Andy and other members of the Carlson family will host this musical showcase in honor of Grandpa Earl. Musicians performing during the evening include Charlie and Nancy Hartness, Art Rosenbaum, the Andy Carlson Band (Casey Cook, Greg Earnest, Michael Smith and Keith Morris), Brian Burke, David Blackmon and Cal Hale (the Normaltown Flyers), Bill Ashley and Earl's Kitchen Band, InCahoots (Mike Harrison, Allan Hughes and Phil White) and Joel Cordle.
At 9:00pm, there will be an open stage for any and all musicians who wish to honor Grandpa Earl with music.  This event is free, open to the public and is an all ages show.
