Five and Ten Gets Green Light for New Building in Athens, Ga.

The renowned restaurant will move to Milledge Avenue.

 

They dotted all the i's, crossed all the t's and even got a landmark status for one of the trees on the property of the historic house. With the exception of a few zinging rhetorical questions by one commissioner, the rezoning application by was a complete love fest at Tuesday's meeting of the Athens Clarke County Commission.

"It just doesn't get any better than this," gushed Commissioner Kathy Hoard. "This is excellent adaptive use for this property by people who want to do the right thing."

, and restauranteur Hugh Acheson told the Commission he wanted his restaurant to stay in Five Points, where it's easily accessible to so many pedestrians. He said he thinks moving a restaurant into a historic home next to the sorority house will be a good use for the building. And he's looking forward to no more talk of the "shabby chic" of his current Lumpkin Street building.

The new facility will be able to seat 112 people. The restaurant will be receiving an alcohol waiver because it's across the street from . The fellowship has no issues with Five and Ten relocating across the street.
