Free Third Thursday evening art tour scheduled for June 18

The next Third Thursday, the monthly evening art tour of seven public art galleries, is scheduled Thursday, June 18 from 6-9 p.m.

ATHENS, Ga. – The next Third ThursdayΒ­ – the monthly evening art tour of seven public art galleries – is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 from 6-9 p.m.

Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through cooperation and co-promotion by the organizing entities.

The June 18 tour will include the following exhibitions/galleries at these stops:

Lyndon House Arts Center – β€œDiscarded Beauty” features stunning painting, photography, sculpture, collage and relief works all investigating the potential beauty of decay, dust, the discarded and abandoned with works by Janelle Young, Sarah Emerson, Manty Dey and Susan Hable. β€œWhere We Live, Work and Play,”includes sculptural and kinetic works investigating playful activities, working tasks and the nature of us as we live, work and play in our neighborhood featuring sculpture by Martijn van Wagtendonk, Caryn van Wagtendonk, Jennifer Desormeaux Graycheck, Tad Gloeckler, Cameron Lyden and Michael Oliveri. β€œThe Home Show” is guest curated by Ann Hester and Alex Murawski. This exhibit is a selection of the artistic birdhouses created over the years to benefit previous Athens Area Habitat for Humanity building projects. This show of fantastical birdhouses, a β€œChinese pagoda,” an β€œair stream trailor,” sculpture for the birds, will delight all.

CinΓ© – β€œOfferings and Amendments,” an exhibition of sculptural wall pieces by Garrett Hayes.

Hotel Indigo – β€œThe Finders” exhibition investigates works by artists who use found, discarded and re-discovered materials. These are works of assemblage, collage and construction. The GlassCube features an architectural installation of paintings by Carol John.

The Classic Center – The Classic Center presents, β€œPeaceable Kingdom,” picturing an array of animals, those great and small, in the Classic Gallery I. This exhibition feels like exploring a zoological garden, featuring the work of local artists Will Eskridge, Lawson Grice, JenΓ‘ A. Johnson, Susan Pelham and Cheryl Washburn. β€œFlight,” the new spring exhibition in Classic Gallery II, examines our feathered and flying friends and features the work of Margaret Agner, Will Eskridge, JenΓ‘ A. Johnson, Maria Mueller and Susan Pelham.

Georgia Museum of Art – β€œEl Taller de GrΓ‘fica Popular: Vida y Arte” consists of approximately 250 works of Mexican sociopolitical art created by El Taller de GrΓ‘fica Popular (the Workshop for Popular Graphics). Founded in 1937, the workshop fought for social change and against fascist aggression at home and abroad by informing and inspiring the Mexican people and like-minded organizations around the globe.

β€œArt Hazelwood and Ronnie Goodman: Speaking to the Issues” presents prints by California Bay Area artists, Art Hazelwood and Ronnie Goodman, who confront and tackle such present-day realities as homelessness, poverty, war, corruption and violence in their art.

β€œQuarks, Leptons and Peanuts” exhibition features the work Jay Robinson has created since a fire in the mid-1990s destroyed his home and studio. After the fire, Robinson’s work moved in a different direction and he reinvented himself as an artist, taking inspiration from science. He started studying molecular physics and constellations, moving toward abstraction from a previously realistic approach.

β€œLines of Inquiry: Renaissance and Baroque Drawings from the Ceseri Collection” features 11 drawings from the collection of Giuliano Ceseri. It focuses on techniques, themes and stylistic developments in European drawing from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Other exhibitions include β€œArt.gif,” a display that includes six looping GIFs by a variety of artists and β€œTerra Verte,” which occupies the sculpture garden and is by Scottish artist Patricia Leighton.

ATHICA – The β€œDetour Thru Your Mind” exhibition will offer original artwork, in various media, from local artists as well as accompanying prose, poems, and musings from our literary community. The companion publication will serve as a fundraiser to help support ATHICA’s annual programming. Copies of the publication will be available for purchase in our gallery at the opening reception and during the run of the exhibition, while supplies last. Pre-sale price, $20.

Lamar Dodd School of Art – Lamar Dodd School of Art is closed for this Third Thursday.

The Third Thursday shuttle, which is sponsored by The Classic Center Cultural Foundation, will circulate through all of the art venues every 45 minutes, beginning at the Lyndon House at 6 p.m. Free parking is available at the Lyndon House Arts Center and the Georgia Museum of Art.

All exhibits are free and open to the public.
