Friends of the ACC Library Sponsor Community Reading of MLK's Letter

On Tuesday, April 16, at 7:00 p.m., the Friends of the Athens-Clarke County Library will host a community reading of Martin Luther King’s “ Letter from Birmingham Jail,” as part of a world-wide celebration marking the fiftieth anniversary of this historical document.  The Birmingham Public Library is the sponsoring agency for this international event, with libraries, museums, schools, universities, churches, synagogues, temples, book stores and work places around the globe participating.

On April 16, 1963, Dr. King began the letter while confined in the city jail for his participation in the “Birmingham Campaign,” a planned non-violent protest against racial segregation by the city government and downtown retailers.

The Friends of the Athens-Clarke County Library have engaged men and women of varying backgrounds and ages to read the Letter. The program will be held in the library auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on April 16. All are invited to attend this free event.
