Got Trees? The Local Government Does, in Athens, Ga.

1. Annual Canopy Replacement Plantings: this program plants large canopy,
balled-and-burlapped trees in spaces that can accommodate them. We use a
variety of species including American elm, tulip poplar, oaks, river birch, and maples. These high-quality trees are only available in locations that have enough room to support their roots and canopy without interfering with adjacent sidewalks, sight-triangles, or utilities. The trees are 6-10 feet tall and 2-inches in diameter at the time of planting. Over the last few years, we have successfully planted trees in the Boulevard, Cobbham, Homewood Hills and West Gate neighborhoods. Up to 25 trees are available in this program. Planting begins in January.

2. US Forest Service Trial Plantings: this program builds off of a successful program to plant large bareroot trees in urban settings. The trees are 4-6 feet tall at the time of planting. These trees will be used in smaller spaces because they include species such as eastern redbud, trident maple, and Chinese elm. Up to 30 trees are available in this program. Planting begins in December.

Since the trees in these programs are planted on public property, they are the sole responsibility of Athens-Clarke County. We will provide the tree, installation, water and other care required for these trees. At no point will an adjacent owner ever be responsible for the care of these trees. We do not want to plant a tree adjacent to a property where the owner does not want a tree; therefore, we are asking that you respond to this e-mail by December 14th if you are interested in having the right-of-way in front of your property evaluated for use in one of these programs.

When we have a list of potential locations, we will evaluate the sites to select planting locations and have them screened for underground and overhead utilities. Once the sites pass screening, you will be notified of the results which include the species to be used and the anticipated planting time. At this time, you will have another opportunity to opt out of the programs if you have changed your mind. In our experience approximately 50% of sites will pass the initial screening.
