Have You Tried A Pottery Class?

A visit to Good Dirt in Athens, Ga., for a "Try Clay" pottery class.

Well, if you're looking for something to do, and don't mind getting your hands dirty, I encourage you to check out a pottery class at Good Dirt. Good Dirt is located downtown on North Thomas Street. I stopped by one of their Try Clay classes to see how it all works. If you have no former experience in making pottery, this may be the class for you. The instructors go step-by-step on how to work the clay on the wheel with a hands-on demonstration before you even begin on the wheel yourself.

Students are then given their own ball of clay. With a little help from the instructors, as needed, their clay creations start to take shape.  Now, sometimes this doesn't always happen on the first try, so don't be discouraged. With time permitting, each student can create two clay objects. The instructors then help the students get their clay creations off the wheel and to the table to be painted. Before the painting process begins students are given hands-on instruction on how to clean up their wheels. Once the clean-up has been done, the painting begins. All of the students' work will then be glazed and fired in Good Dirt's kilns.

Good Dirt offers all kinds and levels of classes so be sure to check out their website to view the dates and times. There are a number of different summer camps running right now.  I have heard from other parents of kids who have attended summer camp at Good Dirt, that their kids just loved their time there. You will also want to stop by the gallery to check out all the unique pottery creations for sale by local artists and the owner, Rob Sutherland.

Good Dirt...a great local business!
