Is Your Child Hearing Everything at School?

With our kids back to school, now is a great time to make sure they are getting everything they need to make this a successful school year.  We all know to check vision, but we don't always think to have hearing checked.  Hearing is vital to reading, language, social, and general educational health.
Some things to think about:
1.  Classrooms all have some amount of ambient noise (regardless of whether students are talking or not).  Heating/AC units, lighting, shifting in chairs, rattling of papers--they all make noise which can interfere with the teacher's voice.  
2.  When you add distance from the teacher to the student, as well as factors including the volume/pitch of the teacher's voice and whether the teacher is projecting their voice or even facing the students, these can all interfere with how well their lesson is being heard by students.
3.  Hearing loss in only when ear (whether it is permanent or temporary from something like an ear infection) greatly reduces how someone can hear when there is competing noise, affects the volume of sound, and affects the ability to detect where sound is coming from.
4.  A condition called Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) may be present which can mask itself as a reading or attention difficulty.  It is usually present with normal hearing and can be thought of like dyslexia for the ears.  For those with CAPD sounds are heard normally, but PROCESSED differently.  CAPD can have symptoms such as: being easily distracted, difficulty following directions, speech and language difficulties and more.
