Kaiser Permanente Opens Athens Office

New facility is the 29th in Georgia for the company.

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia has opened its newest facility—a $3.5 million Athens Medical Office on West Broad Street. The Athens office is Kaiser Permanente of Georgia’s first location outside of metro Atlanta. The company is expanding, and the Athens facility represents its 12th medical office.

Kaiser is Georgia’s largest non-profit health plan, serving more than 240,000 members statewide. It offers health insurance as well as medical care.

“The new Athens Medical Office provides our members who live and work in Athens-Clarke County and the surrounding area with convenient access to our services,” said Kerry Kohnen, president of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia.

The facility is staffed by physicians of the Southeast Permanente Medical Group, which provides care exclusively for Kaiser Permanente members. In Athens, it offers adult medicine and pediatrics, though additional specialties may be added later.

It's going to be open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. There will be eight people on staff in the facility while it's open. The 13,000-square-foot medical office has examination and procedure rooms, a laboratory and an on-site pharmacy. Basic radiology services are also available.

Since late 2009, Kaiser Permanente has opened new medical offices across metro Atlanta. The addition of the Athens Medical Office will bring to 29 the number of Kaiser Permanente facilities in Georgia.
