Man Brings Gun to Card Game, Robs Other Players After He Lost

In a twist, one of the victims was arrested on drug charges.

A Lexington man who was robbed by a sore loser in a card game was himself arrested by police.

Athens-Clarke County Police said Royrecus Jermaine Cunningham, 32, was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of marijuana. Police said in a media release Cunningham was found with crack cocaine, marijuana and several small plastic bags when officers were investigating the robbery Tuesday morning at the Days Inn on North Finley Street.

Officers responded to the hotel around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday after a report of an armed robbery in one of the rooms.

One of the victims told police that several people were playing cards when one of the men lost all his money. The suspect then pulled out a gun and demanded everyone’s money.

“[The victim] thought he was joking and told him to put the gun away,” the media release stated. “The suspect then placed the gun to [the victim’s] head.”

The victim gave the suspect $700; Cunningham gave him $200.

The suspect, who is known, left the hotel before police arrived.

The investigation continues.
