Man Killed In Athens House Fire Identified

Athens-Clarke County fire officials said the man died Thursday in a room with a small fire.

ATHENS, GA — A man whose body was found on the floor of a bedroom that had a small fire Thursday afternoon has been identified by authorities as Alvin Beckom.

The fire happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Springtree Road, the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services said Friday.

The cause of death is being investigated, authorities said.

Crews were dispatched to the single-story home after an alarm sounded, authorities said.

When they arrived, they saw smoke coming out of the front door, authorities said. An Athens-Clarke County police officer forced the door open, and firefighters began searching for the source of the fire. That is when they found the man on the bedroom floor, authorities said.

No one else was inside of the home, authorities said.

The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated.

“We are deeply saddened for the loss that the family is suffering and our thoughts and prayers are with them," Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Jeff Scarbrough said in a news release.
