Ms. Senior Athens to be Crowned Tonight

A dozen older women embody the ideals of aging gracefully and well.

Twelve amazing older women will vie for the title of Ms. Senior Athens tonight during a fund-raising gala at the

 “We are thrilled with the group of candidates entered for the pageant, all of whom represent the ideals of living and aging well,” said Jennie Deese, chief executive officer for the (ACCA). “It’s especially appropriate that we’re celebrating the vitality and beauty of older women during Older Americans Month.”

The pageant celebrates women age 60 and over whose zest for life serves as a testimonial to the power of aging gracefully. Contestants include: Annette Barfield, Helen DeLong, Consie Vella Ellington, Catherine Moore Harden, Wilma Jeffers, Bobbie McKeller, Elizabeth Nevil, Rubielen Norris, Jane Parrick, Carol Shelnutt, Judy Sloan, and Susan Wiley.

Saturday’s wingding includes a cocktail hour and dinner, live music and silent auction. Emcees include Doc Eldridge, president of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, and Liz Dalton, local radio personality.

Tickets are $75 per person, a portion of which is tax-deductible. Table packages are available for $585, or $65 per person when purchasing 9 tickets together. All proceeds from the event benefit the programs of ACCA, such as Adult Day Health, Home Delivered Meals and the Athens-Clarke County Senior Center.

“As the crowning event of our fundraising season, this is ACCA’s way of inviting the community to join us in celebrating women in Northeast Georgia—the wives and mothers, sisters and daughters—who make it a more beautiful, vibrant place,” Deese said.

The pageant will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Hill Atrium.

Founded in 1967, the Athens Community Council on Aging is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving the 12 counties of Northeast Georgia. It works to promote a lifetime of wellness through engagement, advocacy, education and support.
