Now, Everyone Can Enjoy the Meal
Our intrepid mom ventures into town to find the restaurants most amenable to little eaters.
Leigh Hewett is an Athens mother of two who lives with her husband and boys on the East Side. She's also a fluid writer who frequents family-happy restaurants.
It can happen to the best of parents. In an attempt to have a semblance of your former life, you take your children to a non-kid friendly restaurant. Everyone seems happy until your sweet angel spills his milk all over the floor. Then, your toddler decides to sing the ABC song at the top of her lungs.
That’s usually when the dirty looks start to come your way from childless patrons seated a few tables over. Life doesn't have to be this way for parents because there are plenty of local and kid-friendly restaurants in the Athens area. Allow me to point you in the right direction.
, 1427 South Lumpkin Street.
This restaurant not only has a great Latin American menu but they offer a courtyard with outdoor seating and a playground. This means that you can eat a Cuban sandwich in peace as your kids run and around with glee. I assure you that not one person will scoff at you. Parents might enjoy bringing a cooler full of chilled libations because you can bring your own alcohol. The fish tacos are a must order! Call 706-227-9979 for all their information.
, various locations- This all-natural and fresh, Tex-Mex restaurant is so kid friendly that the East side location even has a child's size table. That means that you and your better half can try to squeeze in an adult conversation between bites of a great burrito. The menu also offers delicious tacos, quesadillas, nachos and salads. Kids eat free on Monday nights at participating locations. Visit www.barberitos.com for all the details.

If you have yet to dine at this lovely French-inspired bakery, then you are missing out. It is so kid friendly that they offer sidewalk chalk, inviting your little one to create a masterpiece on the cement of the shaded patio. Sit in the fresh air and enjoy a sandwich while your wee ones skip and sing. You will probably get a smile from the family sitting near you. The baked goods are so tasty that it’s almost sinful. With their vegetarian menu and a chalkboard offering the best veggies around, you know that you’re eating high quality food. They seem to not mind children because I was in there with my son (who happens to be the pickiest eater in the world) and the kitchen gladly altered a dish for him. Its laid-back atmosphere keeps the dining room buzzing with people so your child can act as silly as he or she wants and not get hassled for it. The menu is eclectic enough to challenge any seasoned palate and the Golden Bowl might just change your life. The dessert case full of cakes and pies is always a selling point for the kids. The brick oven cooks your pizza to perfection, but even better is how perfectly welcome children are at Your Pie. I ate there just last week when my toddler had a huge meltdown and no one even seemed to notice. They give the kiddos pizza dough to play with. There is even a box full of toys offered as well. The best part is that they have Gelato for dessert and that makes everyone happy. Keep in mind that kids eat free on Monday. Head on over to www.yourpie.com for locations, menu, and hours.

The best news is that kids eat free every Tuesday. Visit www.depalmasitaliancafe.com for locations, hours, and full menu.
