Athens Woman, 75, Sells House, Sends $95K To Man She Met Online: Cops

Charges were issued after the 75-year-old woman told police she sent cash via UPS and Fedex to a an address in Nebraska.

ATHENS, GA — Charges have been issued after a 75-year-old Athens woman told police she sold her house and sent $95,000 in cash to a man she believed she had been speaking to online.

Patch obtained the incident report in the case Monday from Athens-Clarke County Police.

According to the April 18 report, the woman had been speaking to the man on Facebook since March. The woman told police the relationship was getting serious, but then, he began asking for cash.

The woman said she sent money four different times via UPS and Fedex to a Nebraska address, which she said was connected to a woman's name, according to the report.

The Athens woman said the man had begun asking for so much money that she sold her house and sent the man $95,000.

Police issued charges of theft by deception and exploit/inflict pain to/deprive essential services to disabled person/elder person/resident, according to the report.

No arrests have been made in the case, police told Patch Monday.
