📰 News we're reading

1. Athens and UGA growth and what it means for housing (redandblack.com) — Athens residents are facing rising rents as UGA enrollment and the broader Athens population surge faster than new housing can be built. Local officials have approved an Affordable Housing Investment Strategy and zoning changes allowing tiny homes, but many Athens-Clarke County renters remain cost-burdened and vulnerable to being priced out of their neighborhoods.

2. Statham man arrested after pulling knife at concert (onlineathens.com) — An Athens music event at the Work.Shop on Fritz Mar Lane was disrupted when a Statham man allegedly stole about $100 and pulled a knife after staff confronted him. Athens-Clarke police quickly intervened, recovered the money and charged him with theft by taking and reckless conduct, after officers said he put others in unreasonable danger while leaving the venue.

3. Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone at the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens (burnaway.org) — Athens art lovers can explore a major retrospective of sculptor Edmonia Lewis at the Georgia Museum of Art, where about thirty works are displayed with rich historical context and interactive 3D elements. The show, on view in Athens through January 3, 2027, highlights how Lewis transformed marble into vivid scenes of freedom, touch, and spiritual renewal.

4. Julien Baker Announces 2026 Rock Club Residency Tour (rttnews.com) — Julien Baker's fall residency tour will include three intimate shows at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, giving local fans a chance to hear new material with her longtime collaborators. The 18-date run spans six cities and donates part of its proceeds to an LGBTQ youth-supporting nonprofit, The Ally Coalition.
