ATHENS, Ga. (April 23, 2015) –The Economic Justice Coalition (EJC), is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and multi-ethnic organization, began in 2003 as a living wage campaign group. Today, EJC is incubating its next step: the Peachy Green Clean Cooperative (PGCC), the next effort towards creating a sustainable and equal-opportunity community in Athens-Clarke County. PGCC is a full service residential and commercial cleaning enterprise looking for contracts in Athens-Clarke County and is ready to work!

PGCC will be hosting a kick-off party during the Human Rights Festival Saturday, May 2nd at the Flicker Theatre and Bar (263 W. Washington St.) to conclude its GoFundMe crowd funding campaign which has raised over $1,000 of its $5,000 goal as seed capital for the business. Attendance to the Flicker Theatre event will be by invitation-only as a thank you to patrons of the GoFundMe campaign; there is no fee for admission, and the bar will be open for business from 6 to 8 PM.

Guests at the Flicker Theatre on May 2nd will get to view a screening of the documentary β€œOwn the Change” a joint project of GritTV and the Toolbox for Education and Social Action (TESA). β€œOwn the Change” is a twenty minute documentary focused on the power of worker-owned cooperatives like PGCC to help low-income people have good jobs which stabilize families income as well as using environmentally preferred practices.

According to Linda Lloyd, executive director of EJC the β€œEconomic Justice Coalition supports and is an active incubator of the co-op in that it brings [EJC] into the arena of the rights of workers to own their own living wage jobs while being good to the community.” Patrick Davenport, operations manager of the Peachy Green Clean Co-op, adds β€œI am excited to be a part of creating and managing this awesome business that helps provide income for those in need or those looking to supplement their income. Plus, we are local and support local people. Also, our cleaning products are all green which mean they are safe for you and the environment.”

Campaign backers will get to see the finished product of the β€œWe Want Peachy Green Clean Co-op” Film Challenge, a social media challenge which asked the general public in Athens-Clarke County to contribute screenshots or video of themselves saying β€œThe Peachy Green Clean Co-op is coming!” as a promotional video for the GoFundMe campaign.

Initial funding has been supplemented by grants from the EJC as well as Athens Area Community Foundation, Athens Habitat for Humanity and Southern Partners Fund. Additional technical assistance has been provided by The UGA Law Clinic and Goodwill GoodBiz program.

About Peachy Green Clean Co-op
Peachy Green Clean Cooperative is a project of the Economic Justice Coalition and is the opportunity that many hard-working, low-wage workers are looking for. With Peachy Green Clean Co-op, workers can take control and ownership over their careers by claiming ownership and a piece of the cooperative. Dedicated members of the community who have shown a true desire to work hard and achieve success with fair wages and work are encouraged to join as worker-members. Peachy Green Clean Co-op will operate as a group business in which workers will clean homes and businesses in Athens and surrounding areas. Through the Peachy Green Clean Co-Op, we can help workers become more independent, and community members can learn what it means to have ownership and responsibilities in a company. Our hope is that the Peachy Green Clean Co-op will become a household name, providing eco-friendly, low-cost, and efficient cleaning services to individuals and businesses throughout the community.
