Police: Man Mistakenly Thought Bus Driver Kept His $100

Athens-Clarke County Police say a 78-year-old man may have been mistaken when he thought a bus driver kept a $100 bill he says he gave her for fare.

Police said in a media release the man reported on Aug. 20 that on Aug. 13 or 14 he tried to pay the bus fare, but the machine wouldn’t accept his $1 bill. He told police he then saw it was a $100 bill.

“He said the driver told him she would hold the bill until they arrived at the Multimodal Station on East Broad Street,” police said in a news release. “When they arrived, he and the driver went inside but the $100 bill was missing.”

But police say a review of the bus video shows the man handing the driver a $1 bill, and the driver then putting the bill in the machine for him.

The case has been unfounded, and the driver was cleared of any wrong-doing.
