Proposed Property Tax Increase For Athens Clarke County

A $150,000 house will see a tax increase of $12.50.

From the ACC Office of Public Information:

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 1.5 percent over the rollback millage rate.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The budget tentatively adopted by the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission requires that a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate, therefore, before the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission may finalize the tentative budget and set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Governmental Building Auditorium located at 120 Dougherty Street on May 14, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. and in the Commission Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 301 College Ave on May 21, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. and May 23, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
