Redcoat Band Takes the Field Once More

But this time, they won't be carrying instruments.

 

You have another chance to cheer students on to victory against a white team from another university. You can attend a selectively known but wildly enjoyed contest.

On Saturady, February 11, at noon, there’s going to be an old-fashioned mix-it-up. Members of the Redcoats meet those of the white team from Atlanta on a football field.

Yes, you can call it part of the Band in their own Bowl.

Protected just by mouthpieces, the two teams will play an old-fashioned, smash-mouth, no –pads tackle football game at the Redcoats’ band field in the intramural sports complex. For safety's sake, the special teams will have two-hand touch instead of tackling

Some estimate that this particular on-field rivalry started as many as 20 years ago, but it was revived in 2010, according to football player Brett Johnson. There’s no record the earlier games were even played, he says, other than the spike in doctors’ bills and hospital visits.

In 2010, the white team beat the Redcoats in Athens. Last year, UGA won in Atlanta. If history is any guide---well, let’s not go there.
