Stolen Money Leads to Shopping Trip for Teenagers

The only charge is for the 17-year-old, who was charged as a juvenile with obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

A group of teenagers allegedly took $1,000 from an unlocked vehicle, divided it up and then went on a shopping spree at Georgia Square Mall.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old took the money Saturday from an unlocked truck parked near the Baptist Student Union on Lumpkin. On Sunday, an officer was in Parkview Homes, investigating another case, when the 13-year-old confessed to the theft.

The mother of one of the boys involved in the theft and spending spree was preparing to take him and other children to the UGA Police Department, the story says. But the Baptist Student Union isn't on UGA property, so Athens Clarke County Police is the correct agency.

The police officers recovered the merchandise--which included Cookie Monster socks--bought during the shopping trips, the story says. The investigation is continuing.
