Stolen Rifle, 4 Handguns Recovered During Athens Arrest Of 2

Police say one of the handguns was modified for machine gun fire with use of a brass switch.

ATHENS — Two men were arrested Wednesday on multiple charges after Athens-Clarke County Police say they recovered four handguns, one of which was modified for machine gun fire, and a stolen AR-15 rifle.

Police said Monday Demetrius Collins, 18, and Marcus Dowdy, 22, both of Athens, were arrested around 1:15 p.m. at a Parkview Homes residence.

One of the four handguns recovered during a search was reported stolen, police said.

Police told Patch one of the handguns was modified for fully automatic fire with a brass switch.

Collins, who was out on bond on several charges that included an alleged 2021 carjacking, was charged on suspicion of theft by receiving stolen property and obstruction, police said.

Dowdy was charged on suspicion of possession of a machine gun, tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana - less than an ounce, police said.
