Suspect Wanted for Felony Assault and Child Cruelty Apprehended

Sheriff's deputies in Rockdale County on Friday arrested Alex Jemel Lomas, who is accused of beating and injuring his girlfriend's two children, 5 and 7 years old, with a belt strap and belt buckle while he was babysitting them.

Lomas, 27, was wanted on two felony counts of aggravated assault and two felony counts of cruelty to children. Both children had to receive medical assistance for their injuries.

Police had offered $1,000 for information leading to Lomas' arrest. According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Capt. Clarence Holeman of the ACC Police said the department received an anonymous tip this morning that Lomas was at his parents house in Rockdale County.

Authorities went to the house and arrested him.

According to the Banner Herald, Lomas was babysitting on Saturday night while his girlfriend was at work. He is not the children's father. The two got into an argument when he told her he had hit the children to discipline them.
