Good-bye to Bees, Trees and La Confidence

What's happening this sunny Friday.

One of Athens more interesting and loved native sons, the late Fred Birchmore, has an athletic event named in his honor: the Fred Birchmore Glow & Go Aquathlon. it's happening Saturday in Bishop Park. Sounds like something Mr. Birchmore would have enjoyed. You can still register if you wish.

Speaking of Mr. Birchmore, I wish we had a tree ordinance as does the City of Austin, Texas. Athens has aspirations to be like Austin, culturally. Maybe we should take a look at some of their forward-thinking local ordinances as well.

Did you hear about what may be happening to the declining honey bee populations? It’s much worse than researchers initially thought because it’s not any one thing that’s killing off entire hives. Helping these remarkable, essential insects recover is going to be difficult.

Wonder when Downtown Athens Parking Director Chuck Horton is going to be able to give parking scofflaws the boot?

Saturday is a good day to say good-bye to a lovely friend. The Georgia Museum of Art is lending “La Confidence” to Bob Jones University. Come by the museum on Saturday, with your kids if you wish, from 10 to 12 to bid the painting a fond farewell and then participate in an activity.
