By the Bog of Cats resets Euripides’ Medea in the bleak, ghostly landscape of rural Ireland for an uncompromising tale of abandonment and shocking self-sacrifice. The provocative drama shows Hester Swane’s courageous attempts to lay claim to that which is hers, while coming to terms with lifetime of abandonment.

At the age of seven, Hester was deserted by her wild and fiercely independent mother, and has since spent a lifetime waiting for her to return. Now, Hester’s long-term lover, Carthage Kilbride is selling her and her daughter “down the river” for the promise of land, wealth, and respect through a marriage to another woman. Discarded and ignored, Hester sets out with a reckless fervor to reclaim the life that she once had.
