UGA Logs Second Highest Enrollment

The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences remains the largest UGA unit.

The , the state’s largest public institution, has 8,578 new students on its five campuses.

When you combine undergraduate, graduate and professional students, the total is 34,816. This total is 130 more people than last fall.

Yes, it’s a big number—but it’s not as large as the 2009 total, which was 34,885 students. That’s larger than the 2010 population of Oconee County.

Some 26,571 undergraduates are studying on UGA campuses in Athens, Buckhead, Griffin, Gwinnett and Tifton, an increase of 2.8 percent—717 more students than 2010.

Where are all these students enrolling? The faculty of Engineering had the largest percentage growth of all UGA schools at 60.7 percent, the third year in a row. Engineering added 102 undergrads for a total of 270.

Coming in with the second biggest increase, 9.8 percent, was the . The school added 10 students and now has 112 undergraduates.

The Terry College of Business has 34 fewer undergrads on the Athens campus but added students on other campuses. Buckhead, Griffin and Gwinnett campuses contributed 225 new students (2,598 undergraduates total), a 9.8 percent increase.

The increased to 1,862 students, adding 133 undergraduates for a 7.5 percent increase. The College of Public Health now has 585 students, which is 24 more than in 2010. The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources added 12 new undergraduates, bringing the enrollment to 344.

The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences now has 14,057 students after adding 334 more. It’s UGA’s largest college.

Of the 8,573 new students at UGA, 5,122 are first-time freshmen. Some of these, 418, had enough college course credits or other credits to enroll as sophomores, and 21 were classified as juniors. Other new undergraduates transferred to UGA, including 869 classified as sophomores, 568 as juniors and 72 as seniors.

Also 482 professional program students started coursework this fall. In its doctor of pharmacy program, the College of Pharmacy increased by 9.9 percent, or 53 students, to 587. The College of Veterinary Medicine added nine students in its doctorate in the veterinary medicine program and now has 418 students. The law school has 700 students, having lost nine students.

This fall 6,489 graduate students—1,750 of them new—are pursuing masters, specialist and doctoral degrees at UGA. Total graduate numbers decreased by 589 students, an 8.3 percent loss.
